IRA Position Statement

I really enjoyed this article and found it to be very informative. However, what I like the most was the very end where it included a Continuum of Children's Development in Early Reading and Writing.  I love that it had phases for each of the children's development levels for early reading and writing while also noting that children at any grade level will function at a variety of phases. It included at what the children can do at each grade level while also including what teachers and parents and family can do! I believe this will be very helpful when teaching the children in my classroom how to read and write and what is developmentally appropriate for my students.

  1. I absolutely love reading about developmental stages. I just find it so fascinating. But, we always have to remember that students are very different and don't always go through each stage as we would presume.

  2. It is important to remember that every child will be at a different stage in their reading abilities. It is up to teachers and parents to work with their child, at whatever stage they may be at and help them to continue to advance in their literacy skills. The Continuum will be very useful in figuring out what phase a child is on and what the next step should be.

  3. Knowing specifics on what parents and family can do will be very helpful as we become teachers. As we've read, it is very important to try our best to encourage those that make up our students security nets to become involved in sharing the responsibility of developing reading growth. These tips will help us to know what they can do to become involved.
